Today was a great day for photographing the World Cup in Lucerne. There's probably enough good shots to fill three or four blog posts so I recommend checking out the galleries for more. There's a morning, afternoon, and A Finals gallery posted now from Saturday.
The USA had a great day, winning a silver medal in the LM2- and will have fully nine crews racing in A Finals on Sunday. The LW2x, M4-, and W1x won their semifinals. The W2- and W4x won their rep and the W8+ won their race for lanes.
The atmosphere down at the start line has been crazy with hundreds of spectators watching from the restaurant and swimming area. Then there is a diving platform right behind the start line that has kids jumping off from it non-stop.
I was also fortunate to be able to shoot the M8+ rep from above the restaurant which is one of the classic shots in all of rowing. Most of the time at this regatta the only time there are six men's eights racing is in the final so I usually miss this opportunity to shoot the finish line. Then to top it all of the spectators chanted "AAAA-OOOO, AAAA-OOOO" as soon as the crews left the blocks. Pretty awesome! The start of this sequence starts here.
There have been a number of structural improvements to the venue in the last year including a new finish tower and a new platform behind the start line...and the best part is it has a slide and ping-pong table!
